In memory of Scrappy

We recently lost our feline friend, Scrappy. He was a special guy and after several months of hospice he recently passed away. We are trying to adjust to life without this lovable, toe biting character waking us up in the morning with his distinctive "talking" voice. We met him on Maui when he was a stray. He was in need of some help. He had a five inch infected gash on one of his front legs. So we helped him out a few times and he ended up rescuing us in the process. We brought him to California with us when we moved. He was wild at first, but he tamed up into a trusting, huge spirit. Somewhere along the way he developed asthma and then atopic dermatitis and had lots of health issues but he always remained calm and peaceful through all his challenges with his body. Though he cost us A LOT of money, and I could be driving something better than a 1986 Toyota with all the money we spent on Vet bills. He was worth it all to us. He loved music and was always present for rehearsals. He could play the "purr" like nobody's business. We will miss him dearly.

Reviews of "New Works Shows: Skinny Long Legs"

We just played four shows in three days at Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara. The larger show was called New Works by the Santa Barbara Dance Alliance and was a showcase of Santa Barbara's finest choregraphers. We performed in the piece called "Skinny Long Legs" in collaboration with professional modern dancer and spoken word artist Cybil Gilbertson.

The reviews are in and the show was a hit with "Skinny Long Legs" being the standout piece among all the other wonderful talent in the show.

"At the center of the program was Cybil Gilbertson’s “Skinny Long Legs,” a solo she performed herself as a tribute to her aunt, who committed suicide in 2006. Accompanied by her guitar-playing father, Gilbertson’s dance and monologue moved from childhood memories—her aunt as a beautiful woman dressed in pink sparkles and lace, and later as a hospital patient with white bandages on her wrists—into a prayer of gratitude. Ultimately, her reflections brought her back into the space of the black box theater where she lay on her back, simply breathing." from the article Santa Barbara Dance Alliance’s New Works
By Elizabeth Schwyzer of the Santa Barbara Independent

"It is difficult to single out one work among many that were interesting, original and insightful. But Skinny Long Legs, choreographed and danced by Cybil Gilbertson, was a knock-out. It was a tribute to, and an elegy for, an aunt who committed suicide. Since art transcends tragedy, the dance was inspiring rather than depressing. It was made even more poignant that the original music was performed on stage by Fly to Blue, consisting of Gilbertson’s father, David Gilbertson Gunn, on guitar, and his girlfriend, Valarie Mulberry, joining him on vocals.
Oregon in August

The Summit Summer Festival in Oregon was great fun, the sound system and sound person were exceptionally great. It is always a pleasure to perform with true quality sound and so nice to play outside in the open on a beautiful sunny day. And boy was it sunny that day! I thought I would melt. There was an amazing choreographed street dance, painted faces, food, pies, Thai ice tea and amazing art from many local artisans. As the sun went down, the party continued with the wonderful live jam band "Ladyz n the Barley," who really rocked the crowd out with their socially conscious lyrics and beautiful harmonies.
I had such a good time hanging out with my family and new baby nephew, Lake. He fell asleep in my arms four times! It was so good for my heart. He's sooooo cute. I realize I am a little biased, but really it is true. He's got beautiful big brown eyes. He looks a lot like his dad, my big brother. It was really sweet to see how in love my big brother and his wife are with their first born little one. I also got to hang out with my older nephew Quentin, who is such a cool and genuine person, and my niece Cheyanne, who had the funniest pair of striped socks that I have ever seen.....a sign of her good sense of humor. However, there was one draw back; the train. My parents live, literally 25 feet from some freight train tracks!!! The train would idle for 20 minutes, rumble, rumble, rumble, loud, loud loud. Just sitting there, keeping me awake!!! Augh!Getting sleep became an issue for me :( and I love to sleep, so I did get a little grumpy. Well part of the problem was that I somehow bought a bag of decaf coffee, but I didn't know it until a few days later when my sister-in-law pointed it out to me....after I had a day-long migraine from not having caffeine. No wonder that coffee wasn't working...silly me!! I am a little slow without my caffeine though, so that is my excuse.
The thing that I dig about Oregon in August is the blackberries. I made sure to eat a lot of them cuz they are all free and all over the place!!! The other thing that's really cool is all the animals, lots of dogs, cats, chickens and horses and other strange beasts. Chickens are really strange, but I must say turkeys are even stranger. Bird brain, bird brain!! I even saw one snake, which I was not actually that happy to see. I screamed and jumped high up in the air for old times sake. It was just an impulse, really, I did not plan it.
Oh, but it's good to be back home in California.
--Valarie
